Part 1: Chs 1-8 Summary
As the book opens, Kyle Kingsbury is introduced as the main character. It is clear from his retelling of his story that he is a privileged, narcissistic young man. Kyle is a freshman at a private high school in New York City. He is loved by everyone for his wealth, looks and popularity, but not for his personality. The story begins with a brief conversation in an internet chat room where it is clear that Kyle has been changed somehow. Chapter 1 begins Kyle's story.
In the prelude to Part 1, the reader discovers that BeastNYC has joined an online, therapeutic chat room. Inside the chat room, BeastNYC finds other people who have been cursed by witches. A prince has been turned into a frog, a mermaid has become a girl and another man has become a bear.
Part 2: Chs 1-5 Summary
In the Prelude to Part 2, BeastNYC is talking to the other members of the online chat room for people who have been magically transformed. Mr. Anderson is the group facilitator and is trying to get BeastNYC to talk about himself. There are three other members of the group: SilentMaid, Froggie and Grizzlyguy. It is clear from their stories that they are well known characters from fairy tales. BeastNYC is angry and has decided to rant to the group about the witch. After a while, SilentMaid grows tired of the rant and wants to talk about her situation. She is in love with a human and wishes to be transformed into a mute girl so she can have legs and pursue a relationship with him. BeastNYC states that he doesn't believe in love and indicates she is being silly. Froggie tells SilentMaid that she should talk to her family.
Part 3: Chs 1-7 Summary
In the Prelude to Part 3, the online chat room is beginning to heat up. The participants have started to bond and some are moving forward with their lives.
