Alcohol is an intoxicant used many at social functions and for special occasions. When used diligently and responsibly, there are very rare occasions of problems and trouble. When alcohol is consumed moderately, people can relax and depending on the alcohol, actually be semi-healthy. Red wine is known to be good for the heart and arteries. When alcohol is consumed on a daily bases or at large quantities at a time, health problems occur. Alcohol affects the brain cells and leads to unclear thinking, staggering, and slurred speech. Large amounts of alcohol can also cause a person to fall unconscious and can even lead to death. The brain isn’t the only thing in your body that alcohol effects. Alcohol affects the eyes by causing the person to have blurred vision. Someone driving under the influence can end up getting in a wreck due to the blurred vision and can end up with a lot more bodily harm then what the alcohol does by itself. It also affects the heart by increasing the workload of the heart and causes irregular heartbeats. High blood pressure can also result. The liver also takes a beating from large amounts of alcohol. Alcohol poisons the liver and prolonged use causes damage, scarring, and eventually liver failure. The stomach and pancreas are part of the digestive system and they get irritated from alcohol and leads to vomiting and ulcers may result. It may also lead to a not so pleasant morning sitting on the porcelain throne. Your kidneys maintain a proper balance of body fluids and minerals and alcohol throws off that balance and can mess up its functions. Alcohol even screws up the way your veins and arteries work and your blood. Alcohol widens the blood vessels which causes headaches and a loss of body heat. It also reduces your body’s ability to produce blood cells which can result in anemia and infections.
