During 1787 our founding fathers knew that they had to be the ones to make sure that every presidential election was fair and this is when the Electoral College was formed. Many people will think that this is an actual college, however it is not. In 1787 there were several methods of electing the President of the United States, but the founding father felt as if this was not fair or that someone could take advantage of the system that had in place before the Electoral college was set in place.
The Electoral College was created for many reasons, but the reasons that many people will know about are. The first purpose was to create a buffer between population and the selection of a President. The second as part of the structure of the government that gave extra power to the smaller states. The reason that our founding fathers even created the Electoral College was because they were afraid of a direct election to the Presidency, they did not want someone to get the power of being president and manipulate our public opinion .
When it comes to how the Electoral System operates the magic number that anyone of the candidates need to become president is 270 this is the Electoral votes. For instance someone could win the election by getting only the Electoral votes and not the popular votes as well. “Several early elections had problems, primarily because of the number of political parties in the new country and the difficulty of winning a majority of votes. After the contentious election of 1824, there were a few problems with the vote-counting process, but not with the Electoral College process” (CNN, 2005 ).
In 2000 George W. Bush only won the election based on Electoral votes he did not win the election even closely with popular votes, which if they would have done the popular votes he would never have become president since the other presidential candidate won the popular vote.
