Fran Hayden graduated with a bachelor of management studies degree at the University of Waikato and accepted a position with Dairy Engineering in Hamilton, New Zealand. She was offered the position by Rob Poor the chief accountant and accounting department manager. Fran was excited about starting her career with this established company; however, on her first day of work she discovered that she was being assigned to the MIS department because there wasn’t a vacancy position in the department that she was originally hired for. Fran met Peter Bruton, the management accountant and her new boss who explained to her that the majority of her main duties will consist of compiling information for the monthly management report known as “Big Brother”. She also discovered after assisting and completing the “Big Brother” report that the portion of the report that she was assigned to complete was mainly clerical with very little work to do after the submission of the report.
Rob Poor offered Fran the opportunity of attending the management workshop in Auckland on performance measurement without consulting Peter Bruton, Fran’s boss beforehand. Fran accepted the opportunity to attend the workshop with excitement and enthusiasm because it appeared to be a good opportunity to work with management. Rob failed to talk to Peter Bruton about his suggestion of offering Fran to attend the workshop; however, Fran was not informed that her manager was unaware of her attendance to the workshop until after she returned. Fran returned from the workshop and was told by her colleagues that Peter was very upset with her for not asking him if she could attend the workshop. Fran was concerned about Peter’s reaction but she was persistent and continued to distribute copies of her report from the workshop to the secretary of the chief accountant before thinking about dealing with the potential conflict with her boss.
