I entered the lounge and discovered a Service User, Mr D, had slipped from his chair on to the floor. He was unable to get up from there, as he requires assistance from staff to mobilize with the use of a zimmer frame. He was shouting abuse at another service user, NMF who was also sitting in the lounge. After assessing the situation, bearing in mind Tigh a Rudha’s safety procedure, I buzzed for assistance to help resolve the situation that was progressing in front of me as quickly as possible. It is important to assess the Health and Safety hazards posed by the environment or service user’s equipment; in this instance it was a zimmer frame, to prevent risk of injury to myself, fellow colleagues or other service users.
To prevent NMF from further risk or abuse and discrimination, I assisted her to her bedroom, adhering with SSSC Codes of Practice 5.7 ‘In particular you must not put yourself or other people at unnecessary risk’. It is important that a care home is a pleasant place where the freedom and dignity of residents is respected and everyone’s Health and Safety is sensibly and effectively managed. By doing this it also protect Mr D’s privacy and dignity. I informed my colleague that I was leaving the lounge to take NMF through to her bedroom so she knew of my whereabouts in case she required my assistance. NMF was upset and shaken by what she had just witnessed, I stayed with her, comforting her until a co-worker was able to come and sit with her to allow me to be able to assist with the Mr D’s situation in the lounge.
On my return to the lounge I closed the door, again preserving Mr D’s privacy and dignity and abiding with SSSC Codes of practice 1.4 ‘respecting and maintain the privacy and dignity of service user’s.
