FACTORS AFFECTING GOAL DIFFICULTY AND PERFORMANCE WHEN EMPLOYEES SELECT THEIR OWN PERFORMANCE GOALS

Introduction:
Goals are set by the company so that the employees can have a target towards which they can work or aim. Achieving goals not only helps the employees to keep their job but also helps the company to ultimately sustain in competitive world. This study is about factors affecting the difficulty associated with letting the employees set their own goals and performance standards from 3 choices provided by the management themselves. Employees need not discuss their goals with the management and is entirely up to their choice. The aim was to let all the employees select compatible goal that would result in better goal commitment and performance and also motivate weaker employees to improve their performance.
Study accepts the fact that more difficult the goal better would be the reward. It mainly focuses on factors which influence the employees when given a choice to select their own goals and performance standards and has both positive and negative effects.

Research & Findings:-
Because of the hierarchal structure in an organisation, an employee hardly gets any opportunity to manage impression on management. If they get any such opportunity, they would make the most out of it. Being recognized, rewarded or appreciated is well discussed among the management and co-workers and is valued by the employee.
As per the study employees who intend to engage impression on management are more likely to adopt Impression Management Behaviour wherein ‘They attempt to affect the perceptions of her or him by another person target’ (Schneider 1981, 25). Employee continuously tries to be noticed or appreciated or perceived positively by superiors, juniors, and peers and thus gets appraisal, bonus or promotion.
