AC1.1 Evaluate own ability to use a range of leadership styles, in different situations and different types of people, to fulfill the leadership role.
In evaluating my leadership style I have taken a look at my 360 reviews and my feedback from the challenge and support group. The key things that came out from feedback questionnaires were that I lead from the front, inspirational, direct to the point and can wanting to be liked by everyone at times.
I feel that when dealing with the different members of my team I need to be aware of the different personalities and their strengths and weaknesses so that I’m able to adopt the different leadership styles that get the best out of my team and it’s a key element of my leadership style.
I manage a team of six remote workers therefore each member needs to be led in different ways individually and collectively. I have a member of my team that is unqualified very pedantic and also afraid to make decisions, very risk adverse. I have to adopt a mixture of leadership styles when dealing this individual I carryout a grooming coaching role to enable him to progress towards his full qualification as well as a participative style this enables me to give confidence to perform as one of the team, solve problems and improve his quality of decisions and give better customer service. This approach does not always work and sometimes I will use the influence leadership style (Legacee’s Nine Spheres Model) to help me achieve my end goal. The others individuals are a mixture of personalities and I have found it better to lead by example get things done using a very pragmatic approach to get things achieved.
One thing that did come out of my 360 reviews which was that I am comfortable in the affiliative style of leadership within my team and teams I’ve worked with before, this I have learnt from past experiences is a very good way of getting the team committed to a common goal.
