To put ideas and scattered bites of information into a useful, coherent order you use the methods of classification and division. Division is the process of breaking whole into parts, and classification is the processes of sorting individual items into categories. By breaking a large group into smaller categories and assigning individual items to larger categories we can identify the exchange relationship between them. Classification involves more than simply comparing 2 items, or enumerating examples. The principle of classification is the quality your items have in common and would depend on how you wish to approach the members of this large and diverse group. When you divide you start with whole categories and go into sub categories to get to the main point. When arranging the categories in your essay remembers to have the most important one first and go from there with some reason to the order. Definition tells what a term means and how its different from the other terms in the essay. There are two types of definition, one being the formal definition and the other extended definition. Formal definition is a brief, succinct explanation in a dictionary form to explain the term. The extended definitions are definition the term in a paragraph or essay form for a bigger definition of the term. Extended definition don’t use any sort of pattern of development for the essay instead they just go with the flow of the writing. Pattern of development is very important in the writing, there are many but few of them are exemplification, description, comparison and contrast, process, classification and division. When structuring the definition essay, you start out with the thesis statement, and then the intro, then the body which has many staragies. Some of the stagies are synonyms, negation, enumeration, analogies, origin and development.
