Miranda vs. Arizona
For about many years police have been reading suspects their rights because of a 1966 United States Supreme Court case, called the Miranda vs. Arizona. This case came from a room of the Phoenix Police Department. Ernesto Arturo miranda was an eighth grade drop out with a criminal record. Miranda was a person that would get into alot of trouble. he was born on March 9,1941 in Mesa Arizona. He started getting in trouble after his mother died and his father remmaried. Miranda and his father didnt get along with each other very well. In the eighth grade he commited his first crime and was sentenced to probabtion. That’s when he dropped out of school. In 1963, he was arrested for armed robbery of a bank coworker. Miranda only stole $8.00 in cash from her. He already had a criminal record, which included assault, rape, and burglary. He was questioned by the police but was never offered a lawyer. At the time of his armed robbery confession, he confessed that he raped an 18 year old girl, 11 days before his robbery arrest. She was an 18 year old movie theater attendant. It all started when she was greeted by a stranger on her way home. The stranger dragged her into his car. He drove out to somewere were there wasnt anybody and raped her. After she was raped he dropped the girl off near her house. She told the police that the man looked mexican who was driving an early fifties car. She said the man looked like in his late 20's. A week later she believed she saw the car that the man was driving. She got the licensed number plate. The police soon got Miranda and took him to a police station. At the police headquarters he was placed in a line up. He was lined up with three other Mexican guys of similar height but none wore glasses. The girl did not identify Miranda but said he looked like the closest guy that raped her. Detectives Carroll Cooley and Wilfred Young took Miranda into a interrogation room.
