In the novel My Antonia by Willa Cather ,she uses tone and setting to display the feelings of the narrator.this papper will go into further detail accordingly.
When the narrator (jim)first gets to Nebraska ,its in the summer ,and everything is delightfull, he’s happy ‘content ,and almost at peace. He goes about his days lazily doing whatever he pleases once his chores are done with, and this is reflected in the novel, not just by the narration, but in the description of the sceenary . The tall red sod, the enveloping warmth, you can picture how his life was at this time fairly easily because of the extreamely well written and descriptive narration .
One of the other things that happens in this novel ,is that as the seasons change the narrators feelings correspond with the atmosphere that is portrayed. For example ,during the middle of the winter ,as the weather begins to become depressing ,harsh and unrelenting, Mr.Shirmada commits suicide .After this event takes place the narrators life and relationships beggin to go down hill ……for a while.
Nearing the end of the story the narrator moves into the town of Blackhawk. During this time the arthour puts great detail into describing the gloominess of “the dark little hoses that were the harbors of men’s secrets” .This comes at a great time in the novel, for a little further into the novel we learn some of the narrators secrets.
The novel was well written ,and it’s believable that the author uses tone and setting very well to display the feelings of the narrator.
