Research Proposal
Thesis Statement: Without guidance a young boy’s life could be a struggle.
Introduction
In the story, “Thank You Ma’am”, Roger is a young boy who wanders the streets without parental guidance in his life. Our main concern is can he survive without parents? Is there some type of role model or father figure present in his life? Why is parental guidance or involvement important and relevant? According to 2011 U.S. Census Bureau data, “Over 24 million children live apart from their biological fathers. Ninety percent of all homeless and runaway children are from fatherless homes.” (Burton). “Nearly 2 in 3 (64%) African American children live in father-absent homes.” (Facts on Father Absence). The question is relevant just like Roger in the story, this specific situation happens more and more everyday in the society we live in. Children who grow up parentless are more likely to be a menace to society. They tend to drop out of school, use drugs, become poor and have emotional and behavioral problems. Children with no parental involvement are so desperate and ruthless with life’s struggle they engage in criminal behavior due to their own vanity. For example, Roger tried to steal Mrs. Jones’ purse just for a pair of shoes.

The best advice to anyone who grows up without parents is to find a positive role model in the community who will encourage them spiritually and aid in supporting them financially. A mentor or role model like Mrs. Jones is an example of someone who...
