Operation Babylift

After the Vietnam War, Operation Babylift became the biggest event in adoption history in America. In 1975, more than 2,000 children were airlifted from Vietnam and adopted by families around the world, especially in the US. This operation was lead by President Ford, as an evacuation measure during and after the continuous attacks and devastation of cities like Saigon. This operation saved many Vietnamese children’s life and gave them an opportunity to grow up out of the post-war chaos. This happened to Heidi, as she explains in the film “Daughter from Danang”, in which 30 years later, she decided to go back to Vietnam and meet her biological family. For Heidi and for many other children, having the chance to grow up afar from their country represented the development of new personal background. Being adopted by American families gave many Vietnamese children the opportunity to experience in economic status, educational opportunities and family lifestyle.
First of all, growing up in the United States gave children such as Heidi access to a better standard of living that they would not have living in Vietnam. The US is considered a first world country. This term refers to countries that are ruled by a democratic government, which are technologically advanced, and whose citizens have a high standard of living. The United States is known as one of the richest countries in the world. American economy has been stable most of the time during its history; and personal and household income has always been above of most countries’. The US is also a capitalistic country, which is based in market economy, owned and operated for profit. This guarantee better quality of life and equal opportunities accessing education and finding a job. On the other hand, Vietnam is considered a developing country. The Vietnam War destroyed much of the economy of Vietnam. After the war, Saigon was destroyed; most of the Vietnamese lost their houses; and the economy decreased drastically....
