Parents Teaching Children To Fight

Recently, a 37 year old mother in Folsom, California allegedly drove her son to a scene to participate in a fight. Witnesses and a video tape say she was shouting and cheering him on for throwing punches at this boy. Her son is a 13 year old student. The other boy involved was smaller in size and was at a disadvantage. The 13 year old was throwing numerous punches. All anyone could do was to stand by and watch in disbelief. Luckily, another student caught this all on video, which was great evidence for the police. The incident occurred across the street from Sutter Middle School on Monday. The mother was arrested on Thursday. The mother's charges were suspicion of two felonies, endangering the life or health of a child, and contributing to the delinquency of a child (misdemeanor). The 13 year old boy was cited with suspicion of misdemeanor battery. A woman named Gayle Williams attempted to help but was told to mind her own business by the raging 37 year old mom. Both boys were suspended for five days, but some believe it's unfair to the boy who was beaten. He barely defended himself. Although there were no serious injuries, this was obviously a brutal fight.I n an age where our children are growing increasingly violent, it's our job as parents to prevent that from happening, not to encourage it.We are teaching our children that fighting is the best way to solve a dispute when we should be teaching them alternatives instead. What happened to showing our children how to discuss a problem and come to a compromise that all can agree on? Have we really decided to throw away our values and teach hate and violence in the place of peace and love? In times of war, we need to revert back to some of the old-fashioned values of our ancestors, where failing to greet a neighbor was impolite.
