Progressivism Letter

Dear Congressman,

Lately, many heated debates have been going on regarding the issue of equal rights. Since the signing of the Declaration of Independence in 1776, men have had more rights than women in some way, shape, or form. Today, many people long for equal rights, while some people still oppose it. In my opinion, I think an equal rights amendment would do wonders for this country. Not only would it benefit women, but it would also benefit our nation as a whole.
One reason why I think there should be equal rights is that it is completely foolish to discriminate people based on gender. If America is supposed to be a free country, why is it that women are penalized for something that they cannot control? It isn’t their fault that they were born as a woman, so why should it be looked at as though men are superior, and why should they have fewer rights? As a citizen of the United States of America, I think that all people should have a guaranteed set of rights that cannot be taken away. Nobody should be more privileged than anyone else.
Another reason why there should be equal rights is to give equal opportunities to everyone. Why should men be able to go to college and women are expected to have children, stay at home, and do housework? Even if a woman could attend college and do the same exact job as a man, she would get paid less. That makes no sense if both the man and the woman had the same amount of schooling, did the same amount of work, and graduated with the same degree. Once again, this is an example of penalization for something that is uncontrollable.
My final reason for equal rights would be to make the U.S. into a true democracy. If the government was built on the premise that the people decide who leads the country, than why is it that only men can vote? It isn’t morally right to let approximately half of the population, which are men, vote. Women should, without a doubt, be able to decide who governs them. After all, they do live here and...
