Performance-Related-Pay for Serco Managers in NNUH
Background
I have worked at a hospital for a catering company called Serco Catering Company
for two years, and have found that managers are not being attentive to financial
performance. Serco is a private catering company, they provide hospital patients and
staff with essential food and beverages. Senior management receives Performance
Related Pay as part of their reward package, but other managers who are on stage
running the services and facing patients complaints do not.
Serco runs a system of appraisals for managers every year; however, having spoken to
some of the managers, it seemed to me that their participation has been reluctant. In
one monthly meeting, I raised the issue of PRP and whether I would help to motivate
employees by boosting service productivity and efficiency. A definitive answer is not
available yet because there are different conflicting views as to the popularity of PRP
and success of other different systems.
So my research will aim to analyse if PRP could motivate Serco managers, to
establish what kind of system the company could adopt to bring beneficial outcomes,
and what features or methods would suit such company which rely on teamwork
rather then individual base.
Research Aims and Objectives
· Evaluate some motivational theories and clarify if money could be a motivational
factor.
· What benefits PRP could bring to Serco.
· Collect information on the main features of successful systems and the likely
outcome from secondary sources.
· Use relevant primary information gained from other systems and apply them to
the PRP system that could help Serco managers towards greater productivity.
· Conduct survey and questionnaires amongst Serco staff to build a theory and then
draw conclusions whether PRP system would be effective for Serco management.
