Role of Gender

Gender plays a very important role in our lives. From the time of their birth both, boys and girls are separated by gender. Boys are dressed in blue clothing and girls in pink. Boys are taught to play with cars, male action figures, swords and guns and all these items are usually linked with masculinity. And if boys want to play with dolls, they are intervened immediately and are provided with more masculine toys. Girls, on the other hand, are taught to play with barbies, doll houses and all the girly stuff. If they play with guns and swords, they may be labeled as a tomboy. Similarly, when they grow up and decide their careers, their career goals are usually based on predetermined ideas of gender roles. For example, there have been many men who were qualified for many jobs, but have lost them to women who were less capable. Jobs related to trading and selling are often offered to women over men due to the stereotypical idea that women are more sociable than men.
All these factors lead to identifying gender roles by our society. And it is the society that places ideas concerning proper behaviors regarding gender roles. However, over the years, society's rules and expectations for men and women have been very different. Often times ones gender is incompatible with what society deems appropriate. Most people see a relation between the males and females, regardless of the differences in sex and gender. This enables them to develop certain roles towards both sexes. For instance, it seemed for people two-hundred years ago that women should stay home and look after the children while the men exposed themselves to ruthless manual labor, labor which required stamina and strength, something females were not considered to have.
