Luisa Cruz 7th Period January 27th, 2009 The Scarlet Letter SGQ Chapter 1 The landmarks that are present in the setting are the commentary and the prison, and they represent the only two ways that somebody can pay for their sins, death or prevention from liberty. The rosebush that is in the prison is there to give hope to the people that are coming out of the prison, hoping they will receive pity from nature. Chapter 2 Some crimes that could cause one to be imprisoned during this time of “severity” are adultery and plundering. The women of the community feel that Hester’s punishment is not enough; they feel insecure not knowing who the child’s father is. Attention is drawn to the scarlet letter because it’s a symbol of shame, and it’s the way of punishment from the community to mark Hester as an adulterer. Hester bears her sentence to stand on the scaffold in front of the townspeople, by day dreaming, she starts thinking about her life as a little girl back in Europe and how she lived there. From Hester’s mind we learn that she was a poor little girl, that once had a better social status telling from the description of her house, but that later was stricken by poverty.“ …with a poverty-stricken aspect, but retaining a half-obliterated shield of arms aver the portal…” Chapter 3 The deformed man in the crowd is Hester’s husband; he can be easily identified because he is dressed in a strange combination of traditional European clothing and Native American dress. The narrator describes the men in the balcony as the town fathers who sit in judgment of Hester. The Reverend Dimmesdale is the one chosen to demand Hester to reveal the name of her fellow sinner. But as she refuses he doesn’t beg her to do it as if he knew who it is. What is suggested by the lurid gleam is the righteous path that Hester has decided to take to repent for...
