Jared Diaz Dr. Considine ENC 1102 – (MW 9:30) Essay 1 Word Count: Date: 1/20/09 (MW) Sex, Love, and Unfaithfulness: Thematic Elements of Attraction In Anton Chekhov’s “The Lady with the Little Dog” he shows how an average man in his forties sees women as an inferior race, but meets a woman who changes his views. The protagonist in the book is named Dmitri Dmitrich Gurov. As Dmitri meets “the lady with the little dog” he sees that she might be a part of high society, because of how she is dressed and her presentation. Anna turns out to be half of Dmitri’s age, and is described as a young woman with beautiful gray eyes, tall, and slender. Dmitri eventually later in the book moves on to having an affair with Anna after a day of watching the ships come onto shore. Both of the stories had many thematic elements towards sex, love, and most of all attraction. “The Lady with the Little Dog” showed how love can last through distance and that love at first sight could be a possibility. Chekhov was quite discreet however with his expression of sex in his story. He did not want to explain in depth what they were doing to each other and in doing this is didn’t thoroughly explain their feelings for one and other. Chopin’s “The Storm” was much more straightforward when it came to its thematic elements of sex and love.
