Tactical and Organizational Leadership are two incredibly important components to preparing
for and winning military conflicts. Much of a Non Commissioned Officer’s (NCO’s) career is
spent learning, practicing, performing, and perfecting tactical leadership. As a newly promoted
Sergeant Major my focus must align more with leading at the organizational level. In order to
be successful Sergeants Major must become part of an organization’s leadership culture and
be able to effectively act as a conduit between tactical and organizational leaders.
Tactical leadership is the leadership of individual Soldiers and small teams. This type of
leadership is where all Soldiers begin their military career. Most never leave it because they do
not desire organizational level assignments, or do not possess the ability to make the transition
between the two levels. Tactical level leadership is a micro-view of military operations, it is
hands-on, detail oriented, hard work that is well suited to be junior NCO driven. My own
personal experiences being led and leading at this level have been rewarding. It has bridged a
gap between my white collar civilian career and my desire for hands-on, dirty, gritty, military
work and has kept me in the Army during some tough times when all the uncertainty and
sacrifice would have otherwise made it very easy to have complete my enlistment and end my
military career.
Organizational leadership is the leadership of larger groups of Soldiers. It is a macro-view of
