The third quarter immersion was on how technology influences our subjectivity. We were required to create a presentation on how technology does this. To do this we had to know what subjectivity is. My thinking is that subjectivity is how we look at or describe the world. This is changed as we get new things and we are able to perceive the world in different ways.
The question of if we change our subjectivity as we develop our new technology is a very difficult question to answer. The technology we have today was put in place is used to make the lives of the people in the world easier, but has it made our lives too easy? Have we used our technology too much, and made our lives too easy? The idea that we have too much technology is shared by many of my peers in Exped. The project by Emme Lenzo about how technology is all black and white and how that and society cover up the color and beauty of hard work and nature. This is a feeling that I have at times, but I don’t allow myself to cut technology out of my life.
Many people believe that technology and nature should work together to make our lives better. Colton Abel had light bulbs that represented certain things like faith and technology that were controlled by light switches that when they were flipped in certain direction they would turn on lights in a certain order. JonMichael Weigel did a project on how we have faith and we have technology. He said that if our faith works with our technology we can accomplish our task. He used a blindfold to represent faith and a pipe to represent technology. People had to catch a ball thrown at them while blindfolded and when using a pipe to catch the ball. The ideas that these people put across were put forth to tell us that for technology to be successful we need to combine it with what we knew before technology.
