Theodore Robert Cowell was born on November 24, 1946 in Vermont to Louise Cowell. His biological father was unknown to Ted during his whole life. After his birth, Ted and his mother moved to the home of his grandparents in Pennsylvania. In order to protect Ted’s mother of harsh criticism and prejudice of being an unwed mother, Ted was led to believe that his grand-parents were his parents and his mother his older sister.

He looked down on him for not having a high enough station in life. Instead, he looked up to his great-uncle Jack who was a cultured music professor at the university of Puget Sound in Washington. Ted wanted to be just like him.
As a boy Ted was shy and uncomfortable in social situations. He was often teased in school. In high school, Ted always remained a high point average. His teachers described him as intelligent and kind. However he always had an awkward relationship with his fellow classmates, especially the girls. Secretly however Ted was breaking the law.
