1906—Trade Disputes Act - reversing the Taff Vale decision protecting
union funds from claims for damages arising from strikes.
1906/1907—Education Act - empowered LEAs to provide school
meals for “needy” children, compulsory medical examinations
1907-12—improved conditions in
prisons, created the probation service
1908—Children’s Act - special provisions for young offenders: juvenile
courts and remanded homes.
1908/1909—Old Age Pensions Act,
The People’s Budget, Trade Boards
Act (minimum wages in the
“sweated” industries), Labor Exchanges Act, Development Commission (funding of State Welfare)
1911—National Insurance Act and
the Shops Act (legal right of shop
workers to a weekly half-day holiday)
