Have you ever gambled in your life, or made a bet? Most likely you have bought a lottery or scratch ticket which is a form of gambling. It’s a fun easy way to make a quick buck or two. I, like many people, have got myself mixed up in the life style of excessive gambling. I bet more than I actually had and got caught up in some debt with people I wouldn’t even want to walk next to in the street. Casinos and other forms of gambling should be banished from the country because not only are they dangerous, but also morally wrong. Gambling is a very serious problem that is highly addictive, ruins people’s lives, and also harms society. Gambling is a quick, but potentially dangerous way to turn a small sum of money into a large sum of money very quickly. While trying to accomplish this very simple goal many people turn into problem gamblers(people who cannot control their gambling). Soon these problem gamblers start to become overwhelmed and addicted to this life style of trying to make a quick dollar. Gamblers anonymous estimates that there are 6-10 million problem gamblers in the United States (Hurst 84). This number is only going to grow over the next few years. The local and state governments are looking for ways to implant casinos, horse tracks, and places to buy lottery and scratch tickets. They see it as a way to make more money for the state and country, but what they don’t know is that this addiction to gambling they are forcing upon many is a disease. According to Arnie and Sheila Wexler gambling presents many of the same symptoms as drugs and alcohol (135). These addicts become dependent on gambling everyday and feel that they need it to survive. The thought of being able to get money without working will make people do crazy things, and will lead them to ruin their lives.
