‘The Song’ of Vision
The Song of Songs written by Ellen Gilchrist explores the theme of love. Characters in this story are Barret Clare, Charlie, Charles, Amanda McCamey (Barret’s mother), Katie, and Gustave. Barret Clare is a woman who has never felt the touch of her birth mother, who left her for adoption shortly after her birth. The older she gets the more she craves to meet her mother. The story began in a Christmast day. Clare had a message from someone who told that her mother, Amanda McCamey, were searching for her. This made Clare’s emotions run high and she wanted to meet her mother very soon. Then, she was preparing breakfast for Charlie and Charles, but she played with an idea of suicide, putting the barrel of gun into her. However, it was nothing at all because of being interrupted by a phone from Amanda, Barret’s mother. Soon, Clare and Charles went to Arkansas to meet Amanda. By reading this story, there are several points to be pointed out about the point of view of this story.
First, point of view of The Song of Songs short story can be described by its grammatical voice. Here, the narrator uses third person singular, the name of person. It is known in the first three paragraph. The narrator uses the name of person, Barret Clare. We can see that there are five more people like Charles, Charlies, Amanda McCamey, Gustave, and Katie who are considered as the name of person. We may think why it should be Clare who is being ‘a sign’ for deciding point of view. Here, we have to look back, read again, and think about which character who is being the central of attention. Then, we find the answer thet Barret Clare is the central of attention because the story mostly tells about her desperating life because of being left by her mother. In addition, here, the narrator is a limited omniscient point of view because she only focuses on the actions, responses, thoughts, and feelings of a single major character that is Barret Clare.
