A hero involves not only about courage, noble deeds, and outstanding achievements, but also the bravery to make difference and a heart full of love. My hero is Dr. Jose P. Rizal. He is my hero because he is brilliant and valiant person, and dedicated to our country, Philippines. He gave his whole life fighting for freedom from the tyranny of Spaniards.
Jose Rizal was born and lived under the Spanish colonial authorities. Though Spaniards considered Filipinos as inferior and illiterate, Jose Rizal pursued his education and earned a degree of Bachelor of Arts in Ateneo Municipal de Manila with outstanding grades. Then, he enrolled in Medicine and Philosophy and Letters at the University of Santo Tomas and then traveled to Madrid, Spain, where he continued his studies at the Universidad Central de Madrid, earning the degree of Licentiate in Medicine. He attended the University of Paris and earned a second doctorate at the University of Heidelberg. He was a polyglot conversant in at least ten languages. He was a poet, essayist, diarist, correspondent, and novelist whose most famous works were his two novels Noli Me Tangere and El Filibusterismo.
However, as a brilliant student, he became a leader of the reform movement of Filipino students in Spain. He contributed essays, allegories, poems and editorials to the Spanish newspapers La Solidaridad in Barcelona. The core of his writings centers on liberal and progressive ideas of individual rights and freedom specifically, rights for the Filipino people.
