Human Resource Management Assignment: Employee Relations at North Delhi Power Ltd. (NDPL)

In 2002, NDPL inherited the sick Delhi Vidyut Board located in North West Delhi. It was part of the three Discom companies operating in Delhi. At first, the company was completely submerged in many problems and made heavy losses. Union was highly aggressive, issues of power theft, massive commercial losses which had crept in to every level of the company. In order to improve the state of NDPL, the management took many steps in the forward direction. Some of them were, devising an attractive VRS for employees (a step of rightsizing), redeployment of employees, training for team building, promoting performance-based culture, etc. These changes brought about a lot of improvement from profits and customer satisfaction viewpoint. The issue of providing retirement benefits showed the co-operation between the employees and union. NDPL also recruited new people under NDPL scheme and offered a switch to NDPL scheme to DVB scheme employees. This was done to solve the issue of the difference in salaries of employees under NDPL and DVB scheme. The salary structure was done after a job evaluation by re-defining KRA’s and KPA’s and increase in the number of circles, zones and districts, to increase customer satisfaction. Improving Industrial Relations was one of the key HR policies that NDPL had done. In order for effective functioning, solving company grievances was given prime importance and policies like “Meet the CEO” scheme, Grievance Handling System with “Sarathi” helpline were devised to handle with issues of promotion, posting, error in pay slip, working conditions etc. For better communication between management and union, Joint Interaction Forum (JIF), was formed, which involved workers in the functioning and progress of the company.
