Most living organisms depend on clean water for survival especially humans. Clean water is indispensable for humans to lead healthy lives. Contaminated water is hazardous to every living being. The reason why every individual, institutions, organizations in the local, state, and national level are getting involved in relation to the incident at Dan River.
The incident at Dan River is brought about by a massive coal ash spill by Duke Energy. Such incident could have been prevented if the company has taken extra measures to comply with national regulations and the management has thought about the safety and health of every living organism surrounding the compromised site.
Residents affected in various counties of North Carolina and Virginia fear what this incident is going to do to their health. At this point in time, residents are not certain about the truth and authenticity of the water laboratory results.
The reason why on February 6, 2014, several dozen of concerned protesters rallied outside Duke Energy Charlotte headquarters, chanted slogans and called on Duke Energy to remove coal ash from unlined pits near water supplies.
Duke Energy top executive has apologized and pledged to develop a long-term clean-up plan to remove the toxic waste from the Dan River.
