After watching the video about Eddie and how he struggled with working odd jobs and not having found a career. I found that I could relate to how Eddie wanted to better himself and used his circumstances to make that life changing decision to get his degree in Education. I have been working odd jobs just to get by since the age of 16, and like Eddie I was unsure of what I wanted to do with my life at first. I have always feared failure and tend to shy away from doing things that I feel like I will not be able to do my best in. I sometimes find that I refuse to ask for assistance with my school work because I fear of what they will think of me. I don’t want to come off to anyone as less than smart.
I want to share about my experience of college right out of high school. I was a senior in high school and knew that I had the whole world at my fingertips. I had taken the SAT's and ACT's and applied to four different universities because I felt like that was the "right" thing to do. I had never really had thought about what I wanted to do with my life. I just knew I needed to maintain a job to make money so I could pay my bills. I was dealt the hand of an unconventional family. I was raised my by great grandmother and my maternal grandfather, in which both had retired and stayed at home all the time. Neither one of them went to college and received an education. I never had sight of what it was like to actually see anyone get up and go to work. I feel like that played a big part in not having that direction I needed to make that definite decision to choose a college.
Although I had plans to just continue working the job I had at the time, I figured I would try going to college as well. I somehow had it in my mind that college would be just like high school with a lot of freedom. I ended up choosing to go to a local community college where I did terrible. I was not focused and I refused to ask for help with my assignments because I thought I could figure it out...
