I chose to read the Documents on the fort green housing projects. White American tenants filing excessive complaints about their colored neighbors. They did not think they were in a safe environment and expected the city should take action and simply solve the problem by kicking all colored people out of the projects. Letters being written to the mayor of personal disputes or tenants complaining about an overall situation. For example, Mrs. Muriel Rubin wrote a letter to mayor O. Dwyer at the time and told him how there was just one particular colored family that was completely out of control. They were breaking peoples’ windows ‘were very rowdy and disrespectful and when confronted about it they had no shame. The father of the children supported their misbehavior and actually was the one to teach them how to fight at an age as a young as 9 years. Mrs. Dwyer is obviously afraid for the lives of her children and her own including her neighbors.
Now, Mrs. Dwyer had a legitment reason to be afraid. Where as an anonymous writer wrote “they are all filthy” being said towards colored and Puerto Ricans. This tenant believes all whites should be placed in a separate building “away from the filth” and thinks colored and Puerto Ricans in another building. She obviously believes in segregation and thinks life is better that way. As said in the article, “there was no delinquency in New York until they started to come into the city” this is referring to Puerto Ricans moving to NYC.
Both tenants seem to be somewhat afraid of their neighbors but also are just being racist. They are actually given a real problem concerning their “darker” neighbors or that have already made the decision of not liking Blacks or Puerto Rican for the only reason of not being white and from somewhere else. These tenants were not up for progress, or to find a common ground or meet half way with anyone. They went straight to plan C and wanted them out....
