Blue Whales
The blue whale is one of the largest animals to exist on earth, they are too heavy to live on earth due to their own weight. They can range from 110 ft. and up to 190 – 200 tons, but average is smaller according to previous records. The blue whale is the size of 2 humpback whales put together. They have a small falcate dorsal fin which is located almost to the tail, they have three kind of dorsal fins some maybe rounded or pointed, others maybe triangular, then some have moderate falcate fins. Their slender flippers is about up to one-seventh of the body length, which is thin, along with that their flukes are around 25 feet wide. They also have 55-88 throat grooves that run start from their throats to mid-body , that allows them to take in seawater. The blue whales have a rostrum that is flat and u-shaped, that helps them breathe and they have 2 blowholes. When they use their blowhole, it can reach as high as 29 ½ ft. The blue whales have an extremely thick tail stock. The color of the blue whale is blue-gray with mottled light gray. The blue whales have a 2-14 inch of blubber on top 2 keep them warm. When there is cold water diatoms , a single-celled algae, get to the skin and sometimes gets there bellies to change to a yellowish color. And because of the yellowish color the earlier whalers gave it the name of the “sulphur bottom”. The behavior of the whale can be told by blows of 10 to 20 seconds for about 2 to 6 minutes means they are relaxed.
The Blue Whale is a type of rorqual , that’s scientific name is Balaenoptera Musculus, which Balaenoptera in Latin means “winged whale” and Musculus means “little mouse”. Scientists believe that the ancestors of whales lived on land but overtime they changed or adapted to survive in ocean environments.
