Work Breakdown Structure

Work Breakdown Structure

Importance of a WBS
Once a project management plan is set, then the project manager needs to create a WBS or a work breakdown structure. A work breakdown structure is a “project network-modeling step in which the entire job is graphically subdivided into manageable work elements (tasks). (Web Finance, INC. 2015)” In other words, by creating a work breakdown structure, then the project manager is breaking the project management plan into smaller, simpler steps. The purpose “in planning a project, the project manager must structure the work into small elements that are: manageable, in that specific authority and responsibility can be assigned, independent, or with minimum interfacing with and dependence on other ongoing elements, integratable so that the total package can be seen, and measurable in terms of progress. (Kerzner, 2013)”
Kmart, a part of Sear’s Holding Corporation has a project management plan to reorganize the stock room. There needs to an ease of access to the inventory for store use and logical placement of inventory. This is a temporary project to prevent hazardous situations from happening and allowing time for the roof to be fixed. "A project is a temporary endeavor undertaken to create a unique product, service, or result. (Project management, 2013)" Although the definition states temporary, it is not always. The goal of the plan is to be successful. “The definition of project success has been modified to include completion: within the allocated time period, within the budgeted cost, at the proper performance or specification level, with acceptance by the customer/user, with minimum or mutually agreed upon scope changes, without disturbing the main work flow of the organization, and without changing the corporate culture. (Kerzner, 2013)”
