Did you wonder why you are so different from your siblings? You have the same genetics, the same family and you grew in the same environment but what is it made you distinct between them? Truth is there are a lot of things that make you different and unique. One of those things and probably the most important is birth order. Birth order is defined as the rank by age among your siblings and birth order personality is the traits which you acquired based on your birth order. According to Frank Sulloway, author of Born to Rebel, a child’s personality is not solely determined by biology. He says “It is role siblings adopt that leads to difference in behaviour”. It is true that your birth order affects your personality in how you communicate with people, how you adapt or control a situation, how people may see you or how you see yourself. If you understand the concept of birth order it will boost your knowledge about yourself and the people around you. I am the eldest child in my family and I have six siblings. We are all girls. However, each of us has different personalities and behaviours. It same goes to all of you. You may the first child, maybe the middle child or you are the last child in your family. Whatever your birth order in your family, the personalities between you and your siblings are different. This morning, I would like to share with all of you some information about the birth order personalities. In my speech, I will touch on these three groups which are the first child, middle child and the last child. I will tell you about their personalities and behaviours and how the ranking of the siblings affect them.
Firstborn are generally the focus of their parents’ attention because they are the parent’s expectation. Frequently, eldest children grow up with a tendency high achieving, more motivated and enjoying being the centre of attention in the family.
