Bullying isn’t just punching someone in the face or calling people names, it is more than that. Bullying takes form in many ways. All of the examples include physical, verbal, indirect, social alienation, prejudicial, sexual and cyber bullying (bullying.about.com). Did you know that an estimated 200 million children and youth around the world are being bullied (http://www.dealingwithbullies.org). It’s very true that to many people are being bullied. What is bullying? Bullying causes a lot of harm to those being bullied, because of this we should work to stop all bullying from happening.
A bully is a person who uses strength or power to harm or intimidate those who are weaker or different. This strength does not necessarily mean physical, but mental strength as well. Bullies use their power to cause harm to people. This harm is emotional and physical pain inflicted by a bully to the bullied. Children and teens who are bullies are at increased risk for substance use, academic problems, and violence to others later in life.What are the effects of bullying on the bully? Bullies can suffer long-term effects of bullying if their behavior is not addressed. Compelling research confirms that bullies are twice as likely as their peers to have criminal convictions and four times more likely to be multiple offenders.
It is hard to find a way to stop bullying. We need to teach kids today to help others by standing up to defend them when a person is being bullied. Teaching kids to have the strength to stand up to a bully together is one way to end it. Another way to stop bullying is by not being afraid to get adults involved. Avoid escalating the situation. Teasing the bully by calling him or her names or threatening to fight is only going to make things worse. With issues concerning children, it is very hard to create laws governing it.
