Chapter 1: Why is shared information so important in a learning organization in comparison to an efficient performance organization?
Sharing is an integral part in a learning organization. The processing and transmission of information is vital to an organization that concentrates on a learning atmosphere. In a recent article by Ms. Lyle she states “The learning organization supports both individual and team learning with the aim to foster creative and critical thinking across boundaries. It is this mutually beneficial partnership that is instrumental in helping people engage with their work as a meaningful part of a whole that contributes to organizational success” (Lyle, 2012). In contrast a performance based organization focuses on streamlining, less sharing and more concentration on goals and objectives. Open organizations that share information freely among the employees foster a learning atmosphere as well as a sense of belonging. This learning effect causes the organization to be more fluid and effective. Moreover the atmosphere that this form of organization brings to the table allows this to radiate throughout the entire spectrum of shareholders; it even will spread to the customers and the community.
Shared information is so important to a learning organization because of the nature of these types of organizations. Learning organizations are focused on the development of their employees in order to continually transform the organization (Pedler, Burgogyne, & Boydell, 1997). This means that information needs to be shared within the organization at a quick rate and cross-functionally so that the departments can adapt quickly to new information while understanding how their performance affects the other departments within the organization and the other aspects of the supply chain outside the company.
