The aim of this essay is to critically analyze the impact that Frank's living circumstance and his personal health are likely to have on his quality of life. I shall start by defining health and looking at the meaning of quality of life. I will then look at Frank's present circumstance and how this might be affecting his wellbeing and quality of life and suggest ways of improving it .
Health is defined by the World Health Organisation as “a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease and infirmity”(Woodthorpe et al., 2010, P.28). Quality of life means the degree of satisfaction an individual has regarding a particular style of life, quality of life is different for everyone. A person’s quality of life is determined by a number of key external and internal factors. Doyal and Gough in their book ‘A Theory of Human Need’ argue that “physical health, survival and autonomy are basic, universal human needs”,(Leach, 2010, P.7). Doyal and Gough believe that to be fully integrated into society, objective needs such as good living and working conditions, food, water and clothing, are basic requirements and must be met. And that people should have freedom to choose goals which they view as personal autonomy .
Frank's quality of life presently may be affected by different factors which could be Objective and subjective. Frank is 72 and a retired builder who was diagnosed with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease, He lives at home with his wife Dot, who has problems with fatigue. Since Frank's diagnosis of COPD he finds it difficult to leave the house, due to lack of energy brought on by his health conditions. Frank's health is affected physically and could degenerate further if measures are not put in place to improve his present living circumstance. An external factor could be that his being unable to go out would suggest that he is unable to be a part of the community, which could lead to Frank feeling...
