Thousands of young men and women are sent overseas to be killed or injured only to return crippled for life or in a coffin. People continually ask why thousands of men and women injured or now dead may not know the purpose of this war. The purpose of this war has been faulted from the beginning. At first, our President told the citizens of the United States that Iraq had weapons of mass destruction. This has now been proved false. This leaves troops thousands of miles from home fighting in an unfamiliar land for no purpose. Supporters of a war with Iraq say it will help prevent the risk of an attack by weapons of mass destruction developed by Iraq. Critics of a military action that say nothing will be gained, and the U.S. just wants to obtain the oil that Iraq controls. In recent surveys, fifty-two percent of America says that this war has not even contributed to our long term safety. They claim that casualties will be too costly for America to afford. With all the losses that the U.S. is suffering the justifiability of this attack is really put into question.

One of the main reasons for the attacks on Iraq was to disarm them of any weapons of mass destruction that they have. This makes sense to prevent future terrorist attacks, but no weapons of mass destruction were found in Iraq. Iraq did use weapons of mass destruction in the 1980s, but not since then (Massing). Virtually all of Iraq's weapons of mass destruction were destroyed or otherwise made unusable in the 1990's (Massing). Also, Saddam wanted to stay in power and using weapons of mass destruction would mean an end to his power. This calls into question whether or not invading Iraq was justified because the Bush administration should have known that weapons of mass destruction in Iraq were effectively contained.
