The Islam religion has been around for centuries and is followed by millions of people. It is the second largest religion followed in the world; second only to Christianity, which consists of multiple denominations. It is believed that sometime in the future Islam will surpass Christianity and become the largest followed religion in the world. While Islam has been around for centuries, it was not widely followed until after the death of the prophet Muhammad in 632 A.D. How does the Islam religion compare to other religions? What is it really about? Islam is a peaceful religion that believes in but one God, Allah and follows the Holy Qur’an. Islam is a religion unlike many others, but it is also very similar at the same time. To fully understand the Islam religion, one must understand the concepts of the religion. Following the death of the prophet Muhammad, it was decided that another prophet would not be appointed. Instead, a successor known as a caliph was chosen; a caliph would not have the same role as the prophet Muhammad, but he would carry on Muhammad’s teachings (Living Religions, 2007). If you sit back and think about it, you can compare a caliph to the Pope, the head of the Roman Catholic Church (Dictionary.com, 2008). Neither the pope nor the caliph are worshipped or praised in either religion, but they are significantly important because they guide followers of each religion. According to Hash, while Muharram, the Islamic New Year, is important, it is usually not made a big deal of. The Islamic New Year is not celebrated in the same way as New Year’s Day for Christians and other like religions. New Years for other religions is only celebrated for one day, but Muslims celebrate the New Year for the entire month of Muharram. For the first nine days of Muharram, most Muslims fast from sun-up to sundown, even though the fasting is optional. This fasting includes both food and drink, even water.
