A New Gendered Space
I have to come realized that a new gendered space has been found. It is not new, but it is something that I personally have just discovered. After Ms. Collins told the class to scratch the surface and look for a gendered space that you never thought was there, I could not see anything; I was not scratching enough. When I opened that book to read chapter 1, I read the first line where it talks about gethenians and I have realized that my mentality is a gendered space. I know I have grown up to think as a female, but when it comes to today’s world you are taught to be an equal when in comes to gender. So, I am suppose to be the new generation which is fighting for equality, having a higher education and wanting to become CEO of a company and not letting gender guide my future, but it seems that I am still thinking of females as females and males as males. I came to realize this because my cousin is pregnant and just found out that she is having a girl. Once she told my family and me, everyone was very excited and immediately wanted to go by dresses and anything that is pink. From that, I have realized that without knowing, I am still creating a barrier between male and female. Without this baby being born, she will already learn that girls should wear pink, have dolls, be clean, and act nice. Even though that is the initial reaction everyone will get, but no one knows that we are still feeding the idea of inequality. Aren’t we suppose to not care what to buy the baby and have them do things and wear things to let the world know that the baby will be a girl. We are suppose to teach equality where boys and girls are that same, do that same, and can wear the same thing
