Maria Full of Grace
1. After watching Maria Full of Grace the two main characters, Maria Alvarez and her best friend Blanca are portrayed as the typical innocent Columbian teenager going through tough times in their country. Maria is clearly a person with a great attitude towards helping people and being a very kind person. There were clear examples in the movie of her having compassion for Lucy’s wellbeing and the money and effort she put into her nephew Pachito. Her value for money is cherished; she sees the desperate times that her family and herself are going through and makes an executive decision to do this trafficking for her soon to be child and her family. Maria’s consideration towards her community weren’t as high a priority as other things she needed to do. Firstly she didn’t have much or any compassion for her previous boyfriend Juan after realizing he doesn’t really love her, as well throughout the movie she didn’t show any interest in her community other than in her good friend Blanca. At the end of the film we see Maria accept the fact that it’s better she stays in New York, this is for-shadowed when she is talking to Carla about returning to Columbia where she is assured that U.S is a much better for her baby coming along. Where at the end of the movie it shows her decision to let her friend Blanca returning to Columbia.
Throughout the movie Blanca doesn’t really have strong confidence evidently towards boys she was attracted to, when her and Maria were at a dance Franklin’s friend was there and she didn’t want to approach him without the support of Maria. Blanca is also feeling the financial need of the mule job she chose to do, it seems towards the end of the movie due to the events that occurred she did not want to continue working for these types of people realized it was too dangerous. Near the end of the movie Blanca realizes the Mule job that first seemed very enticing wasn’t what it seemed.
