In society people consists of many different races, shapes, and religious beliefs. Parents set out in their child’s life to make a good example of what they would like their child to abide by. Although, parents may have taught their children right from wrong, the children may stray from their teachings. In becoming a police officer one must have special characteristics. Everyone in life makes mistake but at what cost. Society depends on the police officers to protect them from crimes that may occur in the community, whether it is hunting down a rapist or just simply getting a strange dog out of their yard. Police misconduct and corruption are abuses of police authority. Sometimes there may be a police officer that takes advantage of a situation for their own gain. This paper will discuss police corruption in the society.
In becoming an officer some of the important characteristics that the police agency looks for are high ethical standards, integrity, the ability to think on one’s feet, and the ability to communicate with others. There are a number of steps that a person has to take and pass before becoming a police officer. Each agency has a different selection process to be coming an officer.
When applying to the federal agency, one must be twenty-one and a U.S. citizen or a citizen of the Northern Mariana Islands (Federal Bureau). The applicant must also have a high school diploma or a General Education Development (GED) along with a valid driver’s license.
