Did you know that Hurricane Sandy caused $19 billion losses in New York City? Many residents did not take the meteorologist warning of the severity of the storm seriously, after what happened will Snow Storm Irene. And did you know that more than 300,000 New Yorkers were affected by Hurricane Sandy. This caused many people to be faced with the decision of rebuilding or relocating. The family will benefit from both options but, there are also obstacles to both as well. If I was in their position I would relocate. My first reason is because it is costly to rebuild. My second reason is because it is not worth it when I will have to rebuild all over again in the near future. But, I would be conflicted because it is my home. So it would be hard to go with either choice.
My first reason for choosing to relocate is because the cost to rebuild is high. The average cost to rebuild has risen 2% since last year. The average cost per square foot is $259 for Staten Island residents. My house is medium sized, so for those with the larger scaled homes, it would cost much more. An estimated cost for my house is around $310,800. My house has a basement,1st and 2nd floor, and an attic. So depending on the constructor the $310,800 rebuilding cost might go up significantly. Another factor in the price is whether you are covered by your home insurance company. If you are not, the cost will rise by the hundreds.
My second reason to relocate is because it is not worth it if there is a possibility that you might have to rebuild in the near future. In the article it in the ‘A Raging Debate’ section it says “Some scientist think people living in high-risk areas should relocate to places less likely to suffer hurricane damage. They say the threat to people’s lives is too great for them to stay,” It also says “Much of the money to rebuild is coming from federal and state governments. Some people don’t think taxpayers should have to pay to rebuild structures that will most...
