I have started reading the chapter and right away I felt that the beginning is odd. Branding is not what I suppose this chapter should be started with and the arguments of the author for such chapter beginning do not convince me. Brand is the product of organization that comes after some time of successful processing. A new or young company cannot have successful brand right after the opening. It takes time to earn some reputation and make your brand work in a full capacity. Only after timing and fruitful work the real situation in the company can meet what brand insists on. So, that is why the branding part of this chapter might be moved into the middle of the chapter to make the chapter more harmonious.
As it was written effective HR consists of five basic functional areas which are highly interrelated: staffing, human resource development, compensation, safety and health, employee and labor relations.
Concerning staffing I can only say that I totally agree with the author’s idea. I remember this concept from my Psychology bachelor classes, where we discussed about it a lot. Human resources development was next area to be discussed and I was wondered when I read that a career planning and development of the employee is a deal of the HR. In the realms of our country you can hardly find the organization where HR department helps to members of staff to plan and organize theirs career lives. However it is a really interesting idea to be implemented in our domestic companies. I think such care about staff can attract right people to the company. So next functional area was compensation, it is one of the most problematic issues and I fully support the words of the author concerning the “rewards provided employees in return for their services”.
