Rainbow Natural Grocery Co-op is a small member owned grocery store located in the Fondren area of Downtown Jackson. Rainbow is not owned by another company, or a certain person, but it is owned by its’ “members,” whom could be anyone who pays $25 a year for a membership. After thinking long and hard about all the products and services in the world, I figured it would be very interesting to create a SWOT analysis on this company to show how this small and stable grocery store compares to all of the larger franchised stores in the Jackson, Mississippi area.
In our MGMT textbook, a SWOT Analysis is defined as an assessment of strengths and weaknesses in an organization’s internal environment and the opportunities and threats in its external environments. Creating the SWOT analysis, was in fact, quite easy until I came to opportunities.
One of the main strengths that Rainbow upholds is that they offer all types of healthy, organic and natural grown foods. Located on their website, www.rainbowcoop.org, they have posted quite a long list of ingredients that the products they carry do not contain. Ingredients such as artificial dyes, flavors, or colors, nitrates, antibiotics, animal hormones, refined sugar, and many more. Rainbow also offers personal and quick service. If a person has a question about a product, it is very simple to find anyone with a name tag on, who can answer your question. Another strength Rainbow has is that they contain the only fully Vegetarian restaurant in the metro area.
Now, Rainbow does have a few weaknesses. The main weakness is that they close at 7 p.m. and that any other grocery story is always more accessible. The organic and locally owned food products are always seasonal due to them, in fact, being organic. Organic products take longer to grow and are a bit more scarce.
