I decided to write my observation paper on my 10 year old daughter, Julia. When I was given this project at the beginning of the semester she was the first person that I thought of for many reasons. I knew that she was going to love the fact that I was going to be “observing” her. So, I decided to tell her that I was going to have to observe someone for my class and then write a paper on that person. The first thing that she said with such a loud, excited voice was, “Is it going to be about me?” I teased her a little bit by telling her that I wasn’t sure who I was going to observe and even said that I was going to do it on her brother, Devon. When I told her that he eyes went from wide to small disappointed look. Her smile that stretched across her face went to frown that went down to her chin. She gave me the look, like “Mom, really? Are you serious”? But of course, I wasn’t. So instead of torching her any more than that I told her that I had picked her. I could tell that she felt special. Her face lighted up like fireworks on the 4th of July. Her eyes got really big again and the smile stretched across her face again. She jumped out of her chair, ran with a bounce to me and gave me a big hug. She immediately started asking questions about what I had to do and what I was going to be writing about and what I was going to be observing. I told her that I wasn’t going to tell her when I was going to be watching her because I wanted her to be herself. She didn’t even realize that the whole time I was telling her about my paper that I was observing her that whole time.
There are many times that I was watching her where she didn’t know that I was writing down things that she was doing and how she reacted to things. But, there are also times when she knew that I was watching her and writing things about her. I don’t think that it had changed how she acted or how she responded to what I was doing.
