Activation Theory

The activation theory states that mental arousal is needed in order for people to learn how to do things.

Within a social care setting a child at a nursery will have to experience mental arousal in order for its brain to work effectively. The activation theory is useful because it shows how mental arousal is needed for learning how to do things. In other words we need a certain level of activation in order for us to be motivated to achieve our goals.

An example of this within a social care setting such as a nursery, a child will have to experience mental arousal in order to learn to move and do things effectively. This theory teaches the children to put effort in to all they do so that they can achieve their goals which will mentally stimulate them.

- A psychological health behaviour which predicts health-related behaviours. The health belief model was developed in the 1950’s by social psychologists. Health problems are supposed benefits of actions and barriers to action.

Communication Cycle

- It is the process by which a message is sent by one individual carried, then passed through a chain of recipient’s. Making contact with others and being understood the cycle will be repeated if the second person replies. However the cycle does not consider barriers to effective communication and the importance of making sure that the barriers are reduced in order for communication to occur.

- Michael Argyle. Message coded, message sent, message received, message decoded and message understood.
