Topic: Community Service / Volunteer Work
The church I am part of has been my spiritual home since it was founded in 2006. Through my involvement in church activities I’ve become part of different groups including the Youth Group and CCE program; I’ve also met many different kinds of people. This has given me a greater spirituality and it has also given me the opportunity to feel part of a community.
When I first went to mass at Lord of Divine Mercy I couldn’t believe how people could be joyful in a mass held inside an elementary school cafeteria since we did not have a church building. However I immediately saw friends from my school. One of those friends was part of the Altar Servers. At the time it wasn’t a large group due to the recent establishment of the church congregation. My friend invited me to join the Altar Servers and, prompted also by my mom’s heavy insisting, I went to their next meeting to learn what it was like. It turned out that they were a very friendly group and they all warmly greeted me as I went in. I told them I wanted to become an Altar Server. They immediately welcomed me cheerfully and gratefully. That was the first time I felt part of the church.
I was in the altar servers for around a year. We had parties, car washes, cake sales, and many other fundraising activities. After leaving the Altar Servers I joined the Youth Group, upon and became the youngest member. We would meet once a week, and discuss a certain passage in the Bible and share our thoughts and feelings about the passage. We would usher during mass every other week and go on retreats. In order to do certain activities we would do fundraisers, half the profits would go to the church and half to our activity. The youth group didn’t last long because the leaders ended moving to other place due to their job and there was no one else who would take the role of leaders.
