E-cigarettes and Cancer
“There are no scientific evidence that e-cigarettes are a safe substitute for traditional cigarettes or an effective smoking cessation tool” – Russ Sciandra, American Cancer Society New York State Director of Advocacy. Electronic cigarettes or “e-cigs” are a battery powered device that allows users to inhale a Vapor produced from cartages filled with nicotine, flavor and other chemicals. With the product only being on the market for such a short time there is little information on whether it is a safe substitute for cancer causing tobacco cigarettes.
Given so little information in the area of e-cigs, groups like the FDA, American Cancer Society and other organizations simply don’t know how to handle the new product and what regulations to put on it. There is currently no scientific evidence about the safety of e-cigs. According to www.cancer.org in lab tests, the FDA found detectable levels of carcinogens and toxic chemicals, including an ingredient used in anti-freeze, in two brands of e-cigarettes and numerous cartridges. Now this we know is potentially really dangerous, inhaling chemicals into your lungs such as anti-freeze which is used for cooling the motor of your vehicle. Formaldehyde, a known human carcinogen found in cigarette smoke, also dwells in the vaporized liquid of popular electronic or e-cigarettes. The exposure to formaldehyde from e-cigarettes, based on similar chronic use as tobacco, could be five to 15 times higher than from smoking cigarettes. “Vaping” 3 milligrams of e-cigarette liquid at a high voltage can possibly produce 14 milligrams of hidden formaldehyde. Researchers from www.nbcnews.com estimated that a tobacco smoker would get .15 milligrams of formaldehyde per cigarette or 3 milligrams in a 20-pack. With these little known facts people and suppliers can further more educate themselves with this new and up coming product.
